Linking is a key ingredient to search engine ranking. In fact, it is possibly the key ingredient. While the exact algorithms and formulas for the most popular search engines like Google and Bing remain a mystery, the basic components are understood. The quality of inbound links a website has is directly proportional to its search engine ranking.

So what are inbound links? Inbound links are any instance where a website on a different domain links to one of your webpages. Does your business or organization have a listing on Wikipedia or Yelp? If so, then there is probably a link from that listing to your website (probably to your homepage). This is an inbound link.

Quantity of Links -

The more inbound links a website has, the more important the search engines deem it to be. This is because, in the search engine’s point of view, links mean popularity. And popular websites are what the search engine assumes that people want to visit when performing a search. The more important or popular the search engine deems a website to be, the more likely the search engine will serve that website up as a result for related searches. The websites deemed most important will earn the highest page one search results.

Quality of Links -

Of course, quantity is not everything with link building. Just as important as the number of inbound links your website has is the quality of these links. For example, earning a link from a large, well respected website like Wikipedia might have as big an impact on your search engine ranking as earning 100 links from small, relatively unknown blogs.

Earning links from these large websites is not particularly easy, which is why a diversified link building strategy is a key component to any search engine optimization efforts. Targeting a large number of smaller linking opportunities and a few “heavy hitters” will typically produce the best results.

Whether targeting a large, well known website or a niche industry blog, relevance is always important with link building. Having a link from a large, national retailer is great for a business selling products carried in that retailer’s stores, but it’s probably not a great fit for a company in the B2B information technology industry.

METHOD:

The term “link building” refers to the process of increasing the number of inbound links to a particular domain or website.

There are literally hundreds of different methods that can be used to increase the number of inbound links to a website. Some of these methods produce results relatively quickly while others can take months to develop. Additionally, some methods for link building are considered unethical and can lead to a search engine blacklisting a website.

Below are some of the link building methods that can be used to optimize a client’s search engine rankings. These are well established, ethical methods to earn inbound links that have been proven to have a dramatic effect on search engine rankings. Because every business and organization is different, the best link building strategy will always depend on a number of different circumstances. The methods listed below are just a sample of some of the more common link building methods.

Blog Submissions -

Blog submissions are one of the fastest and easiest ways to earn inbound links. There are millions of blogs on the Internet, most of which cater to a particular industry or topic. This is significant because earning relevant links is so important. This is particularly a good strategy for new or young websites.

Social Bookmarking -

Social bookmarking is the process by which people can bookmark, share and even vote on Internet content. Websites such as Digg and StumbleUpon allow users to browse countless press releases, news stories, blog posts and other pieces of content. Visitors to these social bookmarking sites can show their interest in a particular piece of content by voting on it. The most popular content is displayed on the front page of these social bookmarking sites, which can generate substantial web traffic. However, every piece of content that is “bookmarked” receives a link – regardless of popularity.

Directory Submissions: General and Niche -

General Directories

Directories are large websites which catalogue and organize other webpages. For example, Yahoo! got its start as a general directory. Today, DMOZ is the most significant and respected general directory.

Niche Directories

These directories are much more specific than general directories, catering to a particular industry or topic. There are niche directories for almost any business or organization, from wholesale foodstuffs to non-profit healthcare.

Although directories have fallen slightly in popularity as more Internet users rely on search for content, the search engines themselves view these directories as valuable and important. Thus, a link from a directory is given a good deal of credibility by search engines.

The basics of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and Search Engine Optimization (SEM) and what each does.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of using different strategies to improve the level of a web site’s ranking position in a search engine when a user searches for information using keywords or phrases. Some strategies used in SEO of a web site are keyword or phrase research, the creation of proper Meta Tags, good page content, link building, and even usability. The purpose of SEO is to optimize the web site in order to give it a high ranking position in the search engines.

Proper SEO techniques are what gives the web site a ranking position in the different search engines according to the keywords or phrases the web site has been optimized for.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the process of using tools such as a Pay Per Click (PPC) Campaign to bid on target keywords or phrases in the attempt to drive web traffic to the web site. In other words, rather than optimize a web site for search engines, the web site is being marketed through the search engines with the use of paid keywords or phrases in an effort to maximize more exposure of the web site to users on the Internet. The purpose of SEM is to market the website through the different search engines, and drive traffic to the web site.

Like SEO, keywords or phrases need to be researched while using SEM techniques. Using keywords or phrases that are not popular and effective will not give the desired results from either SEO and SEM techniques.

Keywords or phrases are words that users put into search engines in order to find the web site and information they are looking for. It is recommended to create three word keyword phrases, research which of these phrases are most popular and effective for the web site, and optimize the web site to these keyword phrases. It is also important to monitor the keyword phrases to see which keyword phrases are effective and ineffective to the optimization and marketing of a web site. The list of keyword phrases will change due to ineffectiveness, popularity, and other outside factors.

Pay Per Click (PPC) Marketing is an advertising method that allows you to buy search engine placement by bidding on keywords or phrases. These advertisements are usually displayed on the right hand side of the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). Another form of PPC is that you pay for an actual SERP ranking, and you may also pay a pay-per click fee which means the more you pay, the higher in the search engine results page you will be displayed. These types of advertisements are usually displayed right on top of the search engine results page before the number 1 ranking web site.

It is important to remember that all search engines make a distinction between SEM techniques such as PPC and SEO techniques. SEM techniques such as PPC do not help your search engine ranking positions. Only SEO techniques such as properly Meta Tagging your web site, proper keyword placement, and the quality of content on your web site will help with your search engine ranking positions. SEM techniques such as PPC is a search engine marketing strategy.

Both SEO and SEM techniques have the goals to make a web site more visible to the users on the Internet and drive traffic to a web site. Neither SEO or SEM guarantee that you will generate sales through the use of one or the combination of both. This would fall under such things as Web Site Usability. For example, you have 100 visitors come to your web site, and you don’t make a single sale from one. This is not an SEO or SEM issue, rather there is something on the web site causing no sales. Web site usability and functionality of the web site needs to be looked into on why people are visiting the web site but not buying the services or products. This would be the same as 100 people walking into your business and walking right back out the front doors. What is causing them to leave?

Search Engine Optimization is for optimizing a web site with the goal of gaining a high ranking position within different search engines, while Search Engine Marketing is for marketing a web site through search engines with such tools as a Pay Per Click Campaign.

Both Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing require continual work in order to provide the best results for a web site. It is important to remember that these results will sometimes take time; up to 3 months is not uncommon.

In conclusion, using proper Search Engine Optimization techniques will help a web site’s ranking position in search engines, and generate visitors to a web site over time. While Search Engine Marketing techniques will not help a web site’s ranking position in search engines, it will generate more traffic to the web site faster than Search Engine Optimization techniques.

Combining both Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing techniques will help with the web site’s ranking positions in search engines and draw more traffic to the web site with the goal of converting the visitors in sales.

I am writing this white paper for those people who do not have any idea about search engine optimization (SEO). Search Engine Optimization is the only technique to increase your business revenue form internet and global world. Making a website is not enough in this era of technology; million of website are building and uploading daily on the global internet world. Main objective to write this paper is to promote search engine optimization in Pakistan. According to an internet report over 85% of internet users, use search engines to find related websites like yours? Millions of people each day turn to the major search engines to find products, services and information. With over one billion web sites listed with search engines, how will your customers ever find you among the competition? Search Engine Optimization is the solution.

SEO technical definition

SEO is short of Search Engine Optimization. The term used to describe the marketing technique of preparing a website to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine once a relevant search is undertaken.

Why SEO is important today

Today, internet marketing turning point on how popular your site is. Optimizing your site for Search Engine Marketing can result in a large hit rate to your site. This happens only if your site is to show whenever somebody searches for the keywords of your site. If your site is in the top of Search Engine Rankings, you need to take recourse only to search engine promotion. This is the only way you can possibly reach all those people who are really searching for your service or product. Internet Marketing today is dependent only on search engine optimization. It matters little that your website has the most beautiful graphics or the most attractive words.

Internet marketing is now gradually increasing in Pakistan, as we are very late in this field so Pakistani websites are behind in many keywords and in generic keywords. It doesn’t means that we can not reach SEO on generic keywords but it takes a lot of continuous effort to compete the generic keywords. Most important thing in SEO is that how often a website is updated and how much popular website is.

The only way to measure the success of a Natural Search Engine Optimization Campaign is to know where you rank on the Internet’s most important search engines for the keyphrases/ keywords which are relevant to your company, business.

Out of million’s of website on a single keyword (example: trading) only 10 websites comes on the first page of search engine result. 20 percent peoples open second page of the search engine result and 5 percent of the peoples go to the 3rd page, it means that only those websites/pages which are in top 30 results of the search engine will derive traffic to their websites from internet.

Basic Techniques of SEO

Optimizing a website for Search Engines is neither as difficult nor or complicated job as we think. We just need to know what practices to be done and how to do it. You can optimize your own pages yourself and receive excellent ranking in a matter of few months.

As, number of factors are important when optimizing a website, including the content and structure of the website’s copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process.

Crawling, or web crawling is the method search engines use to create an index of the web. Pages are downloaded by an automated service, called a robot or a spider, and processed by the search engine to allow fast centralized searching. When a search engine downloads a page it generally looks at the hyperlinks on that page and processes them based on a set of policies.

Conclusion
In this article I have given an overview of SEO to you, we can achieve top ranking on search engines with continuous efforts and improving our website contents, layout and related material. I have listed all the techniques you can adopt these techniques to optimize your website and getting top ranked.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a substance foreign to many people. Rarely a day passes when I do not get asked a few questions on the topic. So I decided to publish this article in the FAQ hopes it will help people to understand the basics, and make them a little more comfortable with the whole area.

Q: Why Search Engine important to me?

A: 85% of all website traffic is driven by the search engines. The only online activity more popular than research is a messaging service. 79.2% of American users do not go to page 2 of the results. 42% of users click on the no.1 result. For the under-40 years, the Internet will become the most used in the media the next 2-3 years.

Q: How do search engines decide their ranking? SEO Expert

A: IMPORTANT: You can not pay a search engine in exchange for a high ranking in the natural results. You can get a high if your content is deemed relevant by the search engines.

A: There are four stages:

Step 1 – Use the right words on your site

Step 2 – Get lots of relevant sites to link to yours

Step 3 – Use the right words in these links

Step 4 – Have a lot of your content and add more regularly

Q: What is search engine optimization (SEO)?

A: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the art of creating a Web site that is search engine. That means:

1. using the right words in your copy

2. using the right words in your HTML

3. structure your site correctly

4. design your site

Many people use SEO also describe the other ingredients in a high-ranking, “Link Popularity”.

Q: What is the link popularity?

A: Think of the search engines as a big election. All sites in the world are candidates. The backlinks are votes. The more votes (links) a candidate (website) has, the more important it is, the higher its ranking. Link popularity is all about the number of links you have, and how you can get more.

Links to your site on search engines to tell how your site is important. They assume that if it ¡| s important enough to many other sites to link to it ¡| s important enough for them to appear at the top of the ranking. Links are the most important factor in the ranking. In general, the more you link to your site from other sites, the higher your ranking.

Q: Are there any links better than others?

A: Yes! Ideally, such as those related to:

1. from relevant sites (sites that use the same keywords);

2. comes from important sites (have a good ranking);

3. include your keyword within the text link;

4. includes various link text (not the same link text each time), and

5. comes from a page that contains links to several other sites.

When a search engine sees a link that meets most or all of these conditions, she said, Hey, this site must be credible and important, because others in the same sector are pointing towards it.

Q: How do I get lots of links to my site?

A: There are several possible ways to generate links. Some are dubious (like auto-generation software and sites set up by webmasters simply to host links to other sites) and I won’ t discussed here. Others, such as those discussed below, are legitimate.

Q: How long does it take to get a high rank in search engines?

A: A long! It is impossible to say how long you will need to spend generating links, but you can be sure it will be a while, whatever the method of generation link you are using. You just have to keep at it until you have achieved a high ranking. Even then, you will still have to devote some time during the task, otherwise your ranking declines.

A: The Google Sandbox theory suggests that whenever Google detects a new website, it withholds its rightful ranking for a period while it determines whether your site is a genuine, credible, long term site. It does this to discourage the creation of SPAM websites (sites which serve no purpose other than to boost the ranking of some other sites).

Q: Should I submit my site to search engines?

A: Theoretically, no. But I do not want to risk not to do so – especially since it’s free. As soon as you register your domain name, submit it to Google! Even if you haven ¡| t built your site, or thought about your content, submit your domain name to Google. In fact, even if you have not fully articulated your business plan and marketing plan, submit your domain name to Google.

Q: Should I submit my site to search engines more than once?

A: No need. Although some search engines let you do this, there is really no need.

Q: What are the directories and do I submit my site to them?

A: Directories are sites (or Web pages), which lists simply great site and give a brief description of the site. Some are free and some require you to pay for an ad. Free directories are useful because you get a free link. However, the links are not worth much. Paid directories can be good if they are relevant, but can be expensive in the long run, so choose carefully.

- Template Files
These files are stored in a directory (wp-content/themes/template-name/). So if you are using “default theme”, you need to access the files that are stored in “wp-content/themes/default/” directory.

There are several common WordPress template files you should know:

1.header.php
This file is responsible for the appearance of the top section of your blog. If you want to change the header image, you have to access this file. Not only that, this file is also the place to add Meta Tags.

2.footer.php
Similar to the header.php, this file is loaded everytime any page or post of your blog is accessed. It is used to store the HTML tags and the code for the bottom section of your blog.

3.sidebar.php
A sidebar is a section which is usually used to display site navigation. Depending on the theme you are using, a sidebar usually provides links to archives, pages and latest posts.

4.index.php
In fact this file is the main template file. When someone visits the homepage of your blog site, this file will be loaded. Then he/she will see the contents (not the source code) of this file. If you want to make the appearance of your blog become similar to a common website, where there is a static description on the homepage, you may try to put the static content in this file.

Besides those files, a theme usually has some other template files with different purposes. For example, the archives.php is a file used to display posts you made in the past. Then the search.php is used to generate search results.

- Functions
A function is a blog of code to accomplish a specific task. In order to modify template files, you don’t need to master any programming language. Although having a little knowledge in PHP, you can work faster. In WordPress, the name of a function is usually related to its purpose. For instance, “the_title()” is a function to display the title of a post and “the_content()” is used to display its content. - CSS

In particular look for questions being asked. If you can identify a few core questions being posed in a variety of places you will be well on your way to fidning a solid niche market.
