How Do You Place Ads In Your WordPress Blog?

Ok I am confused in the help area for wordpress it says no ads are allowed however I have found tons of online articles about how to include ads on my blog. Are people going around the rules or bending the rules or what?
See there are two type of WordPress blogs.
1. Hosted on wordpress.com (normally *.wordpress.com )
2. Self Hosted Blog
You might have seen prohibition for ad posting because you must be hosting your blog on WordPress.com.

if your blog grows more then 3 GB you need to buy some space.
while in self hosted blog you have freedom to do almost everything you want to do with your blog. including pacing Ads, Javascripts tec.

It depends if they are running their own version of wordpress or not. if you run your own version of wordpress then you can find a google adsense addon that will do your advertisement needs good.
