How Do I Show Employers That I Actually Know Php? I’m Thinking Of Creating A Custom Cms?

I’m thinking of creating a website with a custom CMS (content management system) such as a blog, but is that really cheesy? I want to do something impressive, so…what should I do? I really need your help…

  1. When you go for the interview, they’ll ask you what *they* want to know. Nothing you put on the web will be as impressive as knowing what they ask you and having good, workable answers. How do you prepare for that? You don’t, really. If there’s a good fit between what you know and what they need, you’ll be hired, website or not. If there’s no match, or someone else fits better, you won’t be hired. It’s a matter of applying for the right position at the right time.

  2. Bring samples of your code to the interview. It doesn’t need to be fully developed systems, just maybe 10 or so various printed pages of stuff you have actually written yourself (nicely commented and formatted, please) and something that you don’t need back. Bind it in one of those nice plastic covers. Make sure your name and contact info is prominently displayed on it. Offer it to them for them to review and let them know that they can keep it.
