Wordpress Technology ? the Best Way to Create a Multi Purpose Blog

Wordpress is the best tool for Blogging. Moreover it has become popular as Content Management System. As its functionality can be enhanced by using pluggins .Content Management is total content control. With a content management system, or CMS, you can maintain consistency across your site with a few clicks. Whether brand messaging, news, or even look and feel, a CMS makes site wide maintenance simple and quick. But there’s more to it than that.

With the many capabilities of a Wordpress, businesses can leverage this technology to meet business goals, drive demand, and create deeper user engagement.

By immediately posting news, comments, and other information, a company can respond almost instantaneously to changes in the digital marketplace. Whether this means adding, deleting, or editing live content, a wordpress is a tool that should be carried in every webmaster’s toolbox.

Wordpress is easy to customize

Pick a theme that vaguely resembles what you would like i.e. 2 column, 3 column etc. I’ve chosen to use the default template for this example.

If choosing other than one of the defaults, download and extract the file to the your wordpresswp-contentthemes directory

Either extract the same downloaded file to the same place giving it a different name or simply navigate to the themes folder and copy/paste it into same directory giving it a different name.

You now have 2 identical themes one with the correct name and one with the name you gave.

From Your Theme directory, Open up the style.css file in your favourite text editor and edit the first few lines to suit e.g. Theme Name, Theme Description, version and urls. I made the changes shown below:

That’s it, save and close the style.css file. Then, if you haven’t already, upload those two theme directories (default and MY Theme) to the themes directory online.

Login and Open up your WordPress dashboard under Presentation > Themes you should see both themes, with the correct names beside them, activate the one with your name.

At this point this theme is exactly the same as the original (default), and if any edits you make to your theme do not do as expected, then you can do real-time switching back to the default.

Wordpress as a E-commerce Website

The lite version of this plugin allows you to sell products via PayPal only. Whilst it’s called ‘lite’ it’s not that simple as such. You can have your products in categories, there’s a shopping basket and it uses the PayPal IPN for instant notification. I’ve not gone through the whole process but I would assume that if you’re selling a digital product it will also then provide a download link to the buyer to download the product, as I’ve had the option to set how many times the product can be downloaded by the buyer.

WP e-Commerce is just like any other plugin for the installation. Just unzip the files and upload the directory to your plugins directory, and activate it in the WordPress admin. You then get an extra menu for it, where you can set your shop settings, other preferences, and start adding categories, brands and product information. It can deal with physical products or digital products, the latter was what I was interested in. You can also easily select which fields to have in the form on the front end, and which of these fields to send PayPal so that they’re prefilled. As I’m only looking to sell digital products I took the address details out as these are not needed.

Marketers need to remember that a wordpress gives them the ability to leverage unique pieces of content across multiple sites while providing multi-lingual support and content, a critical factor for companies with an international reach and online presence.

Wordpress as a Forum Website

WP-Forum is a WordPress plugin that enables you to have a forum directly attached to your WordPress installation. As one of the more popular forum software available today, SMF would be a good choice if you have no particular preference towards any forum solution. It’s still pretty bloated/bulky and can be difficult at times to customise (though less than many alternatives really), so I can’t say it’s my first choice solution at the moment. And while its backend integration with WordPress just requires the installation of a single WP plugin, I can’t seem to find a proper guide on layout integration yet. Here’s how you do it:

1.Install either one of two “bridge” plugins, i.e. WP SMF Bridge Plugin 1.0 or the CMS & SMF Plugin. While both provide user account integration (log into/register via WP = log into SMF/register into SMF), listing recent forum topics/messages on your blog, and etc., the latter plugin hooks WP to SMF via a portal CMS known as Enigma. This results in a more powerful setup, but also a more complicated one. So, for those who just want a forum to use with WP, I suggest using the former plugin.

2.Now that we have our backends integrated, layout is next. It’s a pity, however, that there doesn’t seem to be a step-by-step guide on how to do this. So, for now, you’re on your own on this. SMF does have documentation on how to create/edit its themes though.

More SEO For Wordpress

The Meta-Description is used by Google and other search engines to provide the description of a page. This is quite important – particularly since Wordpress by default does absolutely nothing about it. wpSEO can generate post descriptions in a variety of ways, however in most cases it makes sense to cite the actual postings – automatically. If you’d like to be more precise, you can also provide a brief summary for Meta-Description manually. The definition of used Meta-Keywords offers you more flexibility. If you are already using the plugins UT’W or STP, wpSEO can use your tags as keywords. Otherwise the keywords will be automatically generated from the article, which is not always a sound solution for efficient SEO. By default wpSEO generates keywords fully automatically, however you can let it extract text passages marked in bold or italics or in -tags. You can also use filters to ensure that only relevant data is being used

To install the plugin, it’s enough to upload it to the plugins directory (wp-content/plugins) and activate it in the Wordpress engine. You should avoid using two or more plugins (as mentioned before) at the same time. Previously installed plugins can cause conflicts, just like manual entries in your header.php file. To make sure the wpSEO is working properly, you should at least deactivate similar tools; better – delete them.

A last useful feature you might never use, but would be happy to have available once you need it: you may export all your settings as an XML-file and use them for another blogs. Therefore it’s very easy to maintain the optimal configuration and adjust it to a number of blogs.

At it’s very core, Wordpress content management is about reaching the right person, at the right time, with the right CONTENT. This creates an engaging user experience that drives demand. The dynamism of content management, and the re-purposing of relevant and engaging content, is an evolution in online strategy that will drive strong results for any organization.

Your Organization Can?t Afford to not Have a Content Management Solution

Your organization most likely has a server it relies on throughout the office so that anyone is able to access certain information. Your office server, unlike the Internet is not likely to be search friendly and only have the ability to retrieve a list of files related to a keyword search, not full text documents, photos or video clips. Think of the time that could be saved throughout your organization if you and your co-workers were able to retrieve not just full texts, photos and specific documents with one enterprise search but chunks of code or even snippets of code from buried files?

XML is quickly becoming a standard and with that, XML platforms never looked better. Several organizations are deciding to implement a content management solution and uncover the underlying structure of that information to increase workflow and reuse content for new products.

An XML content server does more than store and search documents. The XML content server can deliver high availability, scalability, performance and programmability for content similar to what a relational database provides for numeric and string data.

Your organization will have the ability to create new documents, texts, revamped manuals and also have the ability to sell online because of the almost standard of the XML language. If you are a large publishing house for example, you can have customers purchase a membership to have access to your content. Government information can be quickly researched with high speed results using an XQuery search bar.

An XML content server can be applied to any organization, heavy with content and looking for new content management solutions. Book sellers are looking for ways to compete with the rest of the online world. Print publications are no longer able to compete with digital publications. Insurance companies looking for content management solutions as well as a quick enterprise search to quickly find reports, quickly create content from previous content and streamline processes.

Content is increasing at an extreme rate continuing to bury information. For your organization to stay on top of all of it’s content, look to an XML content server to help you with content mangagement.

Metadata ? the Key to Unlocking the Real Value of a Cms

You’ve heard the admonishment “don’t judge a book by its cover”. How about when that book has no cover? No author or even a spine? You’re probably not even going to bother with it, right?

The same is true for business Web sites that do not ‘tag’ or ‘title’ their data in some way. If search engines can’t locate them, then there’s little chance your customer will either.

Clear labeling is thus crucial to finding the exact data you are looking for. This ‘information about information’, or tagging data for easy identification is called ‘metadata’. But of course that’s just one of its many uses. The following should explain more on the roles of metadata especially with regards to content management systems.

The challenges of managing data

Your customers now demand increased interactivity, and it is imperative to have Content Management Systems (CMS) to manage diverse content. The Web 2.0 world serves content in multiple forms, with high levels of personalization available to each individual. That is because web pages are no longer static as the focus is now on participation, collaboration, and interaction.

Thus, it is vital to measure the success of online initiatives by tracking and analyzing different sources of user feedback such as comments, votes, subscriptions, leads, and the number of downloads.

The challenges of managing unstructured and ad-hoc content creation can be enormous. For instance, if you allow users to add tags to content on your site – how can you ensure the accuracy of such tags? How can you automate the process of managing and moderating information posted by readers? In all these scenarios, classifying content is critical in ensuring a satisfying customer experience.

Role of metadata in a CMS

In a CMS, metadata gives a computer the intelligence to search content based on the description stored about the content. With content in the form of traditional Web sites, intranets and extranets as well as Wikis, blogs, and podcasts, metadata can enable you to quickly “re-purpose” or reuse contentautomatically. For instance, an entertainment portal can use metadata to automatically generate related links whenever a user is browsing an article. If a user is browsing a news release about a new Disney movie, the CMS could use the metadata to identify related content in the form of movies stored on the portal’s shopping site, or ringtones based on classic Disney tunes. So as soon as a user browses a site, the CMS can automatically generate links that show the availability of movies on the Website’s shopping section. This is just a simple example, and the potential of effective metadata in a CMS is enormous. In a business where users quickly need access to information, a CMS using metadata prompts interested users to come back.

A CMS that enables users to define its own metadata has a better chance of creating more value for the content it manages. For instance, subject matter experts can define or tag content. Similarly, external users can be given permission to tag or associate content with keywords or summaries. A CMS which supports metadata can also be used to help users classify their information manually or automatically. For example, your business may classify its information according to metadata such as display name, title, summary, key word, author, expiration date, or the description of the content. Users who wish to lay claim to content they provide, therefore can simultaneously manage it for you as well.

Conclusion

In the Web 2.0 world, it is necessary that you have a central mechanism for ensuring that different pieces of an organization’s content information landscape talk to each other. In this scenario, metadata enables content to be quickly identified, tagged, and composed or assembled automatically. Also, metadata facilitates reusing content or improving information quality. For example, metadata can encourage content reuse by reducing duplicate content and storing each nugget of content only once.

Metadata can be used very effectively in an organization’s content management workflow. By assigning a metadata such as ‘reviewed’, ‘approved’, ‘published’ or ‘expired’, an organization can control and track each content element automatically.

The role of metadata is similar to a catalog in a library. Unless you have a catalog that identifies, tags and shows you the location and availability of the books, finding a book of your favorite author in a huge array of books seems like an impossible task. Metadata is that catalog that your CMS needs to quickly identify and retrieve specific data from your vast information landscape.

This article is contributed by Rob Rose – Vice President of Crownpeak. The role of metadata is similar to a catalog in a library. Unless you have a catalog that identifies, tags and shows you the location and availability of the books, finding a book of your favorite author in a huge array of books seems like an impossible task.

Selling Content in the ?free? World (and How Your Cms Can Help!)

Whoever said “the best things in life are free” was probably not thinking about content. Then, along comes the ‘big bang’ of information technology and its progeny – the constantly unfolding (and largely ‘free’) online universe, to drastically rearrange our perceptions of value. Suddenly, the very same dollar one ungrudgingly parts with to pick up the daily news on the sidewalk is a deterrent online.

The Internet is about content. People aren’t primarily surfing for pretty colors or fancy flash intros. They’re looking for information that addresses immediate needs. With more than 100 million Web sites sprawled across the virtual horizon, there’s a mammoth amount of content accessible from a mouse click. Such a quantum of data ensures there’s a lot out there that interests an individual; and way more that doesn’t. Sorting through reams of data to get to what interests them is something people now expect to do with minimal fuss (thanks Google!). So things couldn’t be more straightforward for content providers, right?

Wrong! And here’s the barb. Just because you have content people want or need, doesn’t mean they’ll be persuaded to buy it. Why would they when almost everything is duplicable and a lot of it is free!

What’s Better than Free?

One reason why the digital environment is such a great distribution system is because it is remarkably suited to copying. Copying runs deep in its genes. The foundational protocols of communication that make the Web possible also demand that every action, character and message is copied several times along the way. Quite simply, the digital economy runs on the fuel of duplication. And if the industrial revolution made mass-produced reproductions cheap, the digital revolution makes it free. That poses a considerable challenge to the established order of sales and marketing. Kevin Kelly, founding executive editor and self-pronounced ‘Senior Maverick’ at Wired magazine frames the big question plainly. “If reproductions of our best efforts are free, how can we keep going? To put it simply, how does one make money selling free copies?”
But let’s be clear here, currency on the internet can have multiple meanings depending on your business. Of course it’s your Paypal account or credit card number, but it can also be a lead generated from a prospect filling out a form. An action that we want to elicit from a customer or prospect is money one way or another whether it’s an email address or .99 for a subscription.

In his insightful article, ‘Better than free’, Kelly goes on to suggest that the only sustainable path to making people pay in a free world is to actually sell what cannot be copied! He goes on to explore the qualities or features he believes will generate the kind of value for digital content that will make people reach for their pockets even when there is a gratis carrot to be grabbed. Here are a few worth mulling over.

• Immediacy: Timely content is invaluable. People want to know about some things anytime they develop, while they want to know other things only when they have a felt need for it. Either way, a fresh carrot will win every time.
• Interpretation: The information is free, but the expertise to interpret what it means in a given context is what will make information truly valuable to consumers.
• Authenticity: The Internet confers true democracy on authorship. It is no surprise then that there’s enough slanted, outdated and even blatantly spurious material out there. People will pay more for content they know is coming from an authentic source.
• Personalization: The web is a macrocosm, but it is advantaged over other media in its functional potentialities for infinite personalization. Customers can always be banked on to pay for the most personalized aggregation of relevant content even if it is all out there somewhere for free.
• Accessibility: Owning and maintaining tons of content is becoming far less appealing to the consumer of today. They would rather have someone else store and maintain data and pay them for the service as long as they have on-demand access to it.
• Find-ability: Everybody knows that content has no value unless it is seen. But Kelly makes the insightful comment that niche content will always depend on giant aggregators of content to help niche audiences find what they want. Even when the content is free, making it findable is something that can be sold.

What’s a CMS Got to Do With It?

Internet guru Gerry McGovern believes most Web sites are driven from a technical or graphical design perspective. In the digital world of free copies, that is a sure way to miss the bus. If content providers and marketers hope to make money, they will have to find ways to maximize value-generating potentialities into their content that cannot be duplicated. This can only happen when effectively structured and presented content is the driver. And of course, a good CMS is the ideal engine to ride on. Here are a few reasons why…

• It helps content become the primary focus
Typically that’s easier said than done, especially when you are dealing with dynamic information spread across a complex business environment. But an effective CMS solution can streamline these numerous workflow issues and intuitively structure information to be visitor friendly. A friendly site means completed tasks. That’s a big deal on the ever-distracting Web!

• Better eyes + better ears = maximum personalization
A CMS is great at this. Web analytics tools can help you see just how visitors act on your site and a CMS can actually affect workflows based on that information. Automatic workflows can execute appropriate content structure and visibility changes along pre-determined and flexible rules. New CMS capabilities are constantly enhancing the way media, images and video are displayed and rendered online. This can be crucial to maximizing your site’s content experience. Also let’s not forget social networking. It’s here to stay and a CMS opens out the most viable way to encourage dialogue over your content – a surefire way to add intangible value that can’t be copied, but can be sold.

• Find-ability: trading smoke signals for GPS
Even find-ability gets a shot in the arm. A good CMS should come bristling with revenue-driving features to improve sites, like guided navigation, results management, and keyword integration. Live performance statistics on search engine cataloging and optimization mean you don’t have to sit in the dark with your fingers crossed, praying to be found.

• Accessibility that isn’t a pain in the SaaS!
And things get even better with on-demand CMS. On demand accessibility minus the install, upgrade and maintenance tedium wins hands down! Good SaaS offerings should give you excellent scalability, integration and support so you can focus selling content that is truly valuable in the digital era.

Everybody loves ‘free’. And that is why it is here to stay. But the ability to create value and the urge to reward it is also fundamentally human. Content providers and online marketers will have to find a way to put it all together to stay in the game. And an effective CMS can be a winning hand.
